How to Change the String and Tip on a Pair of Mountain King TrailBlaze and SkyRunner Poles

Maintaining your Mountain King TrailBlaze poles is essential for their longevity and performance. The carbide tips experience wear and tear and may need replacing. This step-by-step guide will help you replace the string and tip.

Materials Needed

Step 1: Dis-assemble the Pole

  1. Using a sharp pair of scissors cut the cord, allowing for the pole to be unthreaded into four separate sections.

Step 2: Remove the old Carbide Tip

  1. Place the bottom piece into a jug of boiling water for approximately 30 seconds to soften the glue.

  2. Using a pair of gloves carefully hold the carbide tip and twist/ pull the old tip. (This will pull the last piece of string through with it).

  3. Ensure all pieces are loose and have no string attached.

** Now is a good time to clean the induvial pieces, removing any grit or mud that may have accumulated within the poles and clean the connecting aluminium parts.

Step 3: Install the New Carbide Tip

  1. Clean the bottom end of the pole, ensuring no old adhesive residue remains.

  2. Place the new carbide/tip into boiling water to help soften the plastic, making installation easier. Make sure it is completely dry before installing.

  3. Thread the cord through a rope end and then through the aluminium bottom section of the pole. The cord end will be at the bottom of the aluminium section.

  4. Align the new carbide tip with the end of the pole and press it firmly into place.

  5. Tap the tip on a hard surface several times to secure it. Ensure no silver connector can be seen, this means the tip is fully installed.

  6. Typically, no glue is needed, as the friction fit should hold the tip securely.

Step 4: Install the New String

  1. Thread the replacement string through each section of the pole in the correct order.

  2. Ensure the string passes through all necessary guides and openings and install the cord end and tie a knot.

  3. Using  long nose pliers, pull through the cord until *tight*.  Hold the cord firmly with the pliers at the top of the pole whilst a second person ties a knot  as close as possible to the top of the pole.  This  enables you to lock your poles ready for use.

  4. Confirm that the knot is positioned correctly to maintain proper tension.
